RadarRanger® in container terminals: collision protection is investment protection

Collision protection sensors from the RadarRanger® series in container terminals are one of the main focuses of »Titze — Indeen in Sensorik«. In these complex large-scale logistics facilities, container cranes work under the toughest conditions, not least in extreme weather conditions. The safety of people, goods and cranes is the top priority for any collision protection concept. If there is a »snag« at a single point, it affects an entire process chain.

It is not without reason that you will hardly find any container harbors in the world where »Titze — Ideen in Sensorik« does not play a central role in protecting your investment. In our international expertise and consulting network, you will find a qualified contact partner who is not only close to you in terms of expertise, but also in terms of location. more

Sensors of the RadarRanger® series: Data, facts, features for use.

Sensors from the RadarRanger® series detect objects up to a distance of 60 m.

The required range is set in 1-meter increments. This value corresponds to the resolution of the RadarRanger®. Depending on the type, the sensors detect both moving and stationary objects, or both.

The systems report object detections via open collector outputs, which are assigned to a 5-pin standard RSF4 connection. Each sensor has three of these outputs. These transmit stop, slow down and other deceleration commands, for example. In addition, the required values can be pre-programmed for specific applications.

Collision protection sensors from the RadarRanger® series are available with a wide range of transmission frequencies and take into account the respective country-specific frequency bands worldwide. In addition to the general international standard, they also meet the special requirements of the countries and regions of Great Britain, France, the USA and Canada.

Example of use

Thanks to its detection zone and its design for harsh conditions, the »BoomRanger®« radar scanner is ideal for protecting container ship bridges from collisions with port cranes. Reliable, even in difficult weather conditions such as dense fog, the »BoomRanger®« is even superior to laser sensors in this area of application.

RadarRanger®: The »eyes of your cranes« are as good as yours — only faster and everywhere at the same time.

The scenario:

Cranes of various tasks and sizes, lorries, trailers and order picking vehicles each follow their own clearly defined movement profiles in container terminals. Nevertheless, there are always disruptions due to critical approaches or route blockages.

The fact is that there is a constant latent risk of collision in container terminals between the various transport systems and peripheral vehicles.

In the event of a collision, it is not uncommon for considerable costs to be incurred due to material damage and operational downtime.

Examples

The task:

What is required is a sensor solution that reliably detects objects on a collision course and takes all collision scenarios into account — above all:

In addition to the possibility of task-specific adjustment of the sensing zones, such collision protection systems must be »tough«.

Outdoor facilities such as container terminals are sometimes subject to extreme weather and climatic conditions. Sensor systems that cannot guarantee full performance due to solar radiation, wind, rain, snow, extreme temperatures, shock, vibration, other mechanical or electromagnetic influences are out of place there.

The solution:

FMCW systems from the RadarRanger® series operate in the frequency range from 24,000 to 24,250 GHz. The detection range of the systems and the range of the antennas can be configured variably depending on the application, task profile or sensor position. Appropriate device types are available to implement different aperture angles.

RadarRanger® was specially developed for the implementation of collision protection systems in the area of fast-moving harbor cranes, for example straddle carriers, RTGC, RMGC, STS and OHBC.

Collision protection solutions for container terminals are also investment protection solutions. Titze sensor technology has proven itself worldwide.

For example Port Said, Egypt

  • The container terminal in the port of Port-Said is located at the northern entrance to the Suez Canal in the Mediterranean and has eight STS cranes on a terminal area of around 559,930 square meters and a berth length of 950 meters. The handling capacity is 533,000 TEU.
  • The favorable geographical location ensures an extremely low deviation angle. This results in cost-effective handling of containers. At the same time, the waiting time for container ships calling at the Port Said terminal is reduced by hours, as they can join the convoy without delay.
  • Last but not least, the use of Titze collision protection sensors from the RadarRanger® series also contributes to smooth handling processes with short throughput times.

For example Barcelona, Spain

  • The TCB container terminal in the port of Barcelona covers an area of 81 hectares.
  • In addition to traditional crane configurations, the terminal operator, Grup TCB, also offers container gantry cranes for the truck lanes on the site. These are equipped with GateOCR, a system for automatic container identification and recognition of truck license plates.
  • Titze sensors from the RadarRanger® series ensure safety against collisions between container cranes and gantry cranes and with trucks and other vehicles.

For example Duisburg, Germany

  • The Port of Duisburg is considered an important logistics hub on the New Silk Road and therefore a hub where trains carrying goods from China arrive. From here, their freight is distributed to the respective European countries of destination.
  • 12,000 kilometers of rail make it possible to transport goods from China to the Port of Duisburg in around 15 days. Transportation by ship would take around twice as long.
  • Titze collision protection systems from the RadarRanger® series are proving their worth in Duisburg as investment protection for mobile handling technology.

For example Maasvlakte Rotterdam, Netherlands

  • The Maasvlakte in Rotterdam represents the largest container terminal cluster in Europe. The port's aim is to develop the Port of Rotterdam into the most sustainable and innovative port area in the world. Among other things, Europe's largest hydrogen hub is being built here.
  • The total area of the port with 131 piers is 124.64 square kilometers and extends over a length of more than 40 km. The handling volume in 2021 was 468.7 million tons with a container volume of 15.3 million TEU. Freight from around 28,000 seagoing vessels and approx. 91,000 inland vessels is handled here every year.
  • In the Maasvlakte, a wide variety of crane types work in combination and with maximum efficiency in container handling. Last but not least, Titze collision protection systems from the RadarRanger® series also contribute to the safety of the mobile handling infrastructure.

For example Valencia, Spain

  • With a container throughput of 4.8 million TEU, the container terminal in Valencia is the largest port in Spain. The Mediterranean port is also one of the largest ports in Europe.
  • Valencia's port area is divided into different zones: Tankers, bulk carriers, general cargo, ro-ro cargo, cruise ships, passenger ships, container ships and others. These have the infrastructure required to accommodate and handle the different types of traffic.
  • Some zones are technically equipped as specialized terminals. Other areas serve as multi-purpose facilities for different types of transportation.
  • In 2021, container handling alone comprised a total of 2,748 ship types with a total of 135,992,633 trade goods (GT: global trade goods)
  • The Valencia container terminal has equipped its crane systems and peripheral mobile handling technology with collision protection systems from Titze's RadarRanger® series.

For example MedPort Tangier, Morocco

  • The APM Terminal MedPort, integrated into the Tanger Med 2 port complex, is one of the most technologically advanced, efficient and secure terminals in the world.
  • Operations officially began in June 2019. Two expansion projects - starting in 2021 and ending in December 2024 - have significantly increased the size and capacity of the terminal.
  • Located on the Strait of Gibraltar, through which more than 60,000 cargo ships pass every year, the container terminal is now considered a major transshipment point for ship cargo to and from Africa, Europe and the Far East. It has an annual capacity of 1.8 million TEU.
  • The operator, APM Terminals, is using 20 Super Post Panamax STS cranes with two trolleys, 70 automated RGMs (ARMGs) and 65 shuttle carriers on the 2000 m long quay with automated gate lanes.
  • The attribute »one of the ... most efficient and safest terminals in the world« is also supported by the use of collision protection systems from the RadarRanger® series in the handling technology.
